“There is no greater honour or privilege than facilitating the process of healing. To bear witness, to reach out a hand, and to share the burden for someone who is suffering.”

Enhancing Your Psychological Wellness

Although I had a significant amount of formal education including completing a Master of Social Work (MSW), I felt that something was missing in my knowledge and understanding. I knew that successfully coping with my own mental health journey would benefit my clients by enabling me to pass on effective coping tools. As a result, I engaged in a number of specialized CBT, ACT, Mindfulness certification programs and continue to participate in on-going professional education in Somatic Experiencing (SE) to enhance my understanding of the complexity of healing the mind, body, and soul. My pursuit of certificates and trainings in a variety of different yoga practices further developed my comprehension of the unique benefits that different forms of movement have on healing the body-mind.

“One way of directing our attention to deep information is to practice (as often as tolerable as possible) states of deep attention and deep concentration towards our breath, body movement, listening and connecting with another person, noticing the ‘field phenomena’ while in a dyad, triad or group, or towards the natural world.”

Therapeutic Modalities

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is one of the most common evidence-based forms of behavioural therapy that we may incorporate into the sessions to assist you in changing automatic thoughts and behaviours. It has been recommended for a variety of individuals and used to treat a number of different issues. CBT is focused on achieving specific goals through a hands-on and practical approach to problem-solving.

The goal of CBT is to help you challenge patterns of thinking, cognitive distortions, belief systems (core beliefs), and physiological sensations in the body that impact your reactions. CBT helps to influence different thoughts and behaviours to decrease emotional distress and improve interpersonal relationships. By developing new coping strategies, you can be helped to reduce negative symptoms, having a positive impact on your behaviour and overall well-being.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is a well-researched form of therapy that blends acceptance and mindfulness skills in combination with commitment and behaviour-change techniques to help you build a life that fits in line with your values. The ACT model teaches you how to become more curious about your thoughts and provides tools to help you learn to create space or diffuse those thoughts, so they have less control. The ultimate goal of ACT is to increase psychological flexibility to help you focus on your values (knowing what’s important) & to take committed action towards the life you want to be living.

Somatic

Somatic Therapy theorizes that the mind, body, spirit, and emotions are all connected to one another. When trauma impacts the central nervous system it can result in negative changes in the body. Emotions that get stuck in the body from past experiences can be released by developing an awareness of the body-mind connection using specific techniques. This approach assists in decreasing the stress impacting the nervous system. It encourages the autonomic system to positively change and manage the fight or flight response and return you to a regulated state.

Somatic movement focuses on guiding you into a relationship with your own body to improve awareness of this connection. These practices can lead you to move towards embodying the intelligence of what your body already understands. It is an experiential approach to learning and has as the primary belief that the mind can be reshaped through the body.

Yoga Movement

Yoga movement modalities can become somatic when you can allow for an experiential approach to take place and let go of the act of doing. Engaging in your yoga practice in a somatic way is about getting to know your body more intimately”while entering a safe and informed practice of being at home in yourself.

You are the expert, the teacher and allow the wisdom of your body to guide you. Moving through your yoga practice in a more engaging manner by asking questions to check in with how you are feeling encourages you to be an explorer of your own body. This strengthens your ability to pay attention, observe habits that are no longer serving you, and develop new pathways and possibilities.  The work that unfolds gives the body permission to release and change, which is a purely powerful experience.
